Domino to cease publication

February 2009 issue of Domino

While it was known that Domino was in trouble (other “shelter” titles have already ceased publication), staff were told this morning that Domino will cease publication. The last issue will be March 2009.

Domino, the sister magazine to Lucky, had a breeziness missing in other shelter magazines. I will miss it. I also feel for the staff, who will have to look for new jobs.

Michelle Obama’s eyebrow makeover

I normally pass up on stories that PR reps send to me, because (1) I strive for original commentary and (2) I don’t feel equipped about writing about celebrities whose work I don’t know.

This story about Michelle Obama’s eyebrow makeover, however, was too good to pass up:

Michelle Obama

“I just got confirmation from Michelle Obama’s makeup artist, Ingrid Grimes-Myles that she did a major eyebrow makeover for yesterday’s [inauguration] ceremony … The First Lady came under some heat this summer at the Democratic National Convention for her “angry and severe” eyebrows.”

Mrs. Obama did an excellent job of re-introducing herself at the Democratic National Convention after what I’d call her “angry and severe” comments about America. Her eyebrows only served to accentuate her opinions. Still, I like the new eyebrows.

As for me, I couldn’t help but notice the resemblance between her eyebrows and those of a certain Bollywood movie star:

Shah Rukh Khan

Our PR rep used this story as a means to promote Tweezerman Slant Tweezer

CoverGirl Simply Ageless Anti-Aging Foundation
icon

The marketing campaign for CoverGirl Simply Ageless Anti-Aging Foundationicon features Ellen DeGeneres, whose signing as a spokesmodel has been the most hyped of anyone whom I recall recently: the first openly gay model to sign! Ellen, with her blond hair and blue eyes, is actually a throwback to the bad old days when CoverGirl promoted that beauty ideal with the likes of Cheryl Tiegs, Cybill Shepherd, and Christie Brinkley.

Enough about Ellen. What about Simply Ageless? It’s described as makeup with Olay Regenerist (was this an intended pun?) serum mixed in. Cream foundation is not my favorite type of makeup to begin with, and even though this makeup is intended for mature women, it is excessively matte and drying.

At $13.99 (Walgreen’s sells it for $15.99), it’s more expensive than other CoverGirl offerings. Simply pass up Simply Ageless.

Missing IsaDora? Found.

Cover of February 2009 Allure

I was surprised to see a reference to IsaDora eyeshadow in the “Black and Blue” photo spread that appears in the February 2009 issue of Allure. Over a year ago, beauty advisors at Walgreen’s (which had been the exclusive distributor for IsaDora in the U.S.) told me that IsaDora decided against shipping to the U.S.

I checked the credits in the back of the magazine, which indicated that IsaDora was available through walgreens.com. A search of walgreens.com did not yield any results for IsaDora.

The good news is that IsaDora is now being sold through Cosmeticmall.com and Amazon.com!

Post-inauguration thoughts

As with most Americans, I watched the Presidential inauguration. I tuned into C-SPAN, because I knew that there would be less intrusion by the chattering classes.

When so much hype and expectation surrounds an event (the election, the inauguration), I become skeptical and even cynical. It seems that many regard Barack Obama as the Second Coming. He is a politician.

Now since the inauguration is past, President Obama gets down to the hard task of governing. I hope that that will mean euphoric Americans will come down to Earth.

By and large, those of us who voted for the other guy have been at least willing to give President Obama a chance. On the other hand, we’ve been tainted as being taken in by fear. Deepak Chopra, in one of his more loopier moments, said that McCain-Palin represented our shadow selves(!): one woman started a Facebook group on that premise to hold Barack Obama “in the light.” Over one hundred people joined her group.

Now, who wants to be on the side of fear and shadows? Is this not a subtle way to undermine your opponents? I hope that President Obama and his supporters will reach out to those who didn’t vote for him – and that includes the 43% who voted for McCain-Palin.

Another thing: George W. Bush is no longer President. Enough with Bush Derangement Syndrome (BDS).

Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse Airbrush Finishicon foundation is a find! It does what it promises – it delivers a soft matte “airbrush” finish.

I also like the pump mechanism that dispenses a measured amount of product and the locking mechanism that prevents leaking. It’s great for travel. At $8.79, Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse Airbrush Finishicon is a great value.

Happy New Year

I will be leaving for India tomorrow. I’ll be logging in only sporadically for the next three weeks – maybe to update my Facebook status, but likely not to blog.

Visiting my in-laws is the purpose of the trip – it’s been two years since I last saw them (my mother was doing poorly last year, and I didn’t want to go overseas in those circumstances). I also plan to shop for textiles while I’m in India: talk about serendipity – I found an issue of Departures devoted to India at the seniors’ home where my mother lives, and found out all the great places to go shopping.

Here’s to a Happy, Prosperous, and Successful New Year for all!

An idea: Use January 6 (Epiphany) as an opportunity to share gifts (post-Christmas sales, perhaps re-gifting). Epiphany marks the arrival of The Three Kings with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Learn more about Epiphany on Wikipedia.

Your Golden Moment

I love it when L’Oreal comes out with a limited edition collection. Invariably, the limited edition collection features a beautiful eye shadow palette.

Beyoncé and Eva Longoria Parker are featured in the advertising campaign for L’Oreal’s latest limited edition collection Your Golden Moment. Your Golden Moment features two beautiful eye shadow collections: A Little Bit of Glitz and A Little Bit of Glam.

As with many limited edition collections from mass-market brands, the availability of Your Golden Moment collection is erratic. You might have to visit several stores before you find it. The search is worth it.
