H Mart in Fairfax, Virginia recently moved to its new location on 11200 Fairfax Blvd.

I was concerned that the beauty counter tenants from its previous location would move as well. Here’s what HJ said on Nextdoor:

Yes, the beauty counters moved to the new location. Also a small pharmacy, Asian food court, kiddie play corner, a seafood section (follow your nose for that dept), and some parking in the shade are in the new location. Customers are leaving carts all over the parking lot and in precious empty parking spaces instead of pushing them back to the cart corrals, so watch out — or your or your car could hit a cart that’s out of place or rolling around.

Relieved! Naturally, I had to check out the beauty counters. It was gratifying that the beauty advisors remembered me from the old location. Here’s my haul:

  • Black Pearl and Gold Hydrogel Eye Patch from Petitfée: cool and refreshing. I like to put these on before I do my eye makeup.
  • VDL foundation brush: the saleswoman said that she used this brush to blend concealer.  You might be surprised that VDL is an LG brand.  That’s right: the same LG that makes flat-screen TVs, washing machines and dryers, and refrigerators also has a skin care and makeup division.
  • Skincare samples from The History of 후 (Whoo) and Su:m37, also LG brands.  This store is great for handing out freebies!
  • Five-ply cotton facial pads: you can peel off layers on these pads.

FYI H Mart has a stand for lower-priced cosmetics, including Tony Moly, Bbi@, and Missha.  Please note that the beauty counters are tenants, not part of H Mart.

I was curious about Drunk Elephant, so I bought The Littles discovery set.

I’ve exchanged brief messages with founder Tiffany Masterson via Linkedin and found her very responsive and friendly. I haven’t tried all the products in the discovery set. Here are the ones I’ve tried:

  • Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser
  • Lalo Retro Whipped Cream
  • T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum

Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser is the gentlest cleanser that I have used. I like to do a double cleanse with DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser. Lalo Retro Whipped Cream is a very good moisturizer with a whipped consistency. While I had  no problem with the T.L.C. Framboos™ Glycolic Night Serum the first time I used it, I experienced irritation the second time I used it. I skipped all treatment serums and used gentle creams to soothe the irritation the following day.

Of the three products, I’d be most inclined to buy Beste™ No. 9 Jelly Cleanser. Fortunately, there is a sample in Sephora’s 2019 Birthday Gift!

Save the oceans – ban oxybenzone!

Hawaii Governor David Ige signed a bill to ban oxybenzone and octinoxate from sunscreens sold in the state by Jan. 1, 2021 to protect coral reefs and marine life. Beauty trade groups such as the Personal Care Products Council, chemical industry organizations, skin-cancer prevention proponents and big sunscreen brands regard the act as misguided and dispute the research behind it.

Cue Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50. Ocean Potion advertises its products as “reef-friendly.” This article from Beauty Independent notes:

To differentiate themselves from large players with oxybenzone- and octinoxate-driven sunscreens, emerging mineral sunscreen purveyors are promoting their products as reef-safe or not containing the banned ingredients, oxybenzone in particular. The term reef safe could increasingly be subject to concerns as it, similar to other marketing terms in the beauty industry, is unregulated and lacks a clear definition.

Putting that aside, Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50 is a great sunscreen.

It advertises itself as going on clear. It’s a thick white cream in the jar, but with a little blending, it leaves no whitish cast (+). It also has a matte finish (+).  It’s not irritating (+) . Active ingredients are Octocrylene 4% and Zinc Oxide 5% – no oxybenzone.

👍🏻 Recommended. I bought Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50 at Safeway. I’ve also seen it at Giant.

Exciting news!  The insanely inexpensive skin care line The Ordinary is now available at sephora.com.  I hate using the term “disruptor,” as it has become an hackneyed term, but here it applies, as The Ordinary has proven that you buy cheap skin care that works.  It’s already been picked up by luxury brand e-retailer Beautylish.

I shopped The Ordinary for its foundation, but it wasn’t blendable.  On the other hand, I liked the skin care products that I bought:

Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG
Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion (formerly Advanced Retinoid 2%)
Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%

It’s a gentle, non-irritating exfoliating liquid. I apply it at nighttime. I love AHA products because the results are evident when I wake up in the morning. They also provide me a smooth surface for applying makeup.

Here a few updates on the popular article Asian beauty stores in the DC Metro Area | The Style Page:

eCosway has closed, and I changed the marker to red.

There are still Shiseido and AMORE counters inside Super H in Fairfax.  Not only does AMORE carry AMOREPACIFIC brands, but it also carries Missha.  The women at the counter told me that the most popular items were sheet masks and BB cream – no surprise there.  Here is my recent haul from Amore:

  • Missha Stick Eye shadow in Maple Honey
  • Missha Deep Sea Water Firming Eye Patch
  • Missha Speedy Solution Clearing Gel Eye Patch
  • Aritaum The Professional 100% Jelly Cleansing Puff, actually a konjac sponge infused cleansing jelly.  It dries out quickly and is prone to mold.
  • Mamonde Double Effect Ampoule Mask – Violet Flower Ultra Moisturizing, a two-step product consisting of an ampoule (whatever that is) and a sheet mask.

Because I had been to Super H recently, I changed the marker to green.  I turned the other markers to gray, as I can’t vouch for them.

Aritaum describes itself as “the one stop solution for all your beauty needs.”  It is a chain of K-#beauty stores whose parent company is AMOREPACIFIC.  Some Aritaum stores operate under the AMORE name.  Aritaum/AMORE locations are identified by blue diamonds.

According to cosmeticsdesign.com, there are 70 Aritaum stores in the US and Canada, with more store openings planned for this year.

 

 

Micellar water

Once a cult beauty item in the U.S., micellar waters can be found everywhere now, including your local CVS or big box store.

Micellar water is often described in a simplistic way, as a “magnet” that lifts off makeup.  Lab Muffin (!) explains the science behind micellar water in a way that is simple (as opposed to simplistic) and accessible to even the lay person.  It surprised me that micellar water is essentially … soapy water.

I’m currently using Vichy Purete Thermale 3-in-1 Step Micellar Solution and Trader Joe’s Next to Godliness Micellar Cleanser & Makeup Remover Towelettes.  Trader Joe’s: believe it!  In reserve, I have Simple Cleansing Micellar Water, which I bought using a manufacturer’s coupon, and micellar water from Italian brand Rilastil, which was a sample that the lady at Bellacara, a  beauty  boutique in the DC area, tossed into my bag.

I use micellar water alone when I’m not wearing a lot of makeup (especially eye makeup).  I apply it with DHC Silky Cotton pads (thanks, Marcia, for introducing me to this).  I don’t like a lot of rubbing or wiping, so when I have a full face of makeup, I do a double cleanse with DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and DHC Face Wash Powder.  Then I’ll moisten a cotton pad with micellar water to pick up any eye makeup residue.
