Sue Devitt Beauty Defining Eyeliner Pencil

Sue Devitt Beauty’s Eye Intensifier Pencil is one of the best products I’ve ever received. I’ve never had much luck with eyeliner pencils, but Sue Devitt Beauty’s Eye Intensifier Pencil doesn’t need “priming” and goes on smoothly and easily. With smudging, Sue Devitt Beauty’s Eye Intensifier Pencil in Pointe-Noire is great for recreating the sooty kajal-rimmed eye that I so admire on Indian women.

Now Sue Devitt Beauty has come out with the fine-tipped Defining Eyeliner pencil, which complements the jumbo Eye Intensifier Pencil. Like the Eye Intensifier pencil, the Defining Eyeliner pencil goes on very smoothly and easily. I received the Defining Eyeliner pencil in Hvita, a shiny silver that looks like Christmas tree tinsel. It is great for rimming the lower eyelids and illumining the inner corner of the eye. Sue Devitt Beauty Defining Eyeliner pencil in Hvita would be great applied over black eyeliner and smudged. For holiday parties, wear a simple LBD and complement the look with sparkly earrings and hair accessories.

Sue Devitt Beauty

Sue Devitt Beauty is a line of cosmetics from Australia that has reached our shores. I recently road-tested two products: Eye Intensifier Pencil and Mini Lip Gloss.

Eye Intensifier Pencil is a jumbo eye liner pencil with a flexible smudger tip. Usually, I have to “prime” eye pencils before applying, by stroking them back and forth on the back of my hand: with this pencil, I don’t have to. According to the website, “Special ingredient Nylon-12 expands and contracts with facial movements without creasing or cracking, guaranteeing durability and long-lasting coverage.” I can’t vouch for Nylon-12, but I can tell you that Eye Intensifier Pencil goes on very smoothly and lasts. Eye Intensifier Pencil is a winner.

Eye Intensifier Pencil in Pointe-Noire is currently my everyday eyeliner. It also comes in 12 other colors.

Sue Devitt Beauty Mini Lip Gloss

Mini Lip Gloss comes in 12 beautiful shades. I tried the rosy Alanya shade, which was very flattering for my complexion. It’s sheer and neutral enough to flatter other skin tones. It’s somewhat tacky on the lips, so it doesn’t quite reach the gold standard that Three Custom Color Specialists has set for lip glosses.

Sephora discontinued Sue Devitt Beauty, but you may now shop Sue Devitt Beauty at Ulta stores, Ulta.com, and Sue Devitt Beauty.

NOTE These products were provided to me by representatives for Sue Devitt Beauty.

HiP high intensity pigments™ Kohl Eyeliner

There’s some thing exotic about loose kohl powder. Matin said that everyone in his native Afghanistan used surma (kohl) powder to line their eyes and that it remains his favorite product to use. My husband, who grew up in Calcutta, remembers how the Afghan wallahs walked up and down the streets peddling surma and hing, a sulfurous natural resin used in cooking (because of its odor, hing is usually cut with rice flour or chickpea flour).

L’Oreal HiP high intensity pigments™ Kohl Eyeliner

Now L’Oreal has come out with its HiP high intensity pigments™ Kohl Eyeliner. At $12-13, it’s nearly one-third the cost of Guerlain Terracotta Loose Powder Kohl Liner ($34.00), a similar product.

When I first tried L’Oreal HIP Kohl Eyeliner icon, I had a lot of problems with smearing on my lower lids – as though I had some sort of Alice Cooper thing going on. At first, I thought that it might be the Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer that I was using. The Kat Von D Tattoo Concealer has a lot of slip, due to the presence of silicones. I switched to L’Oreal True Match™ Super-Blendable Concealer icon, but had the same problem.

With some experimentation, I learned how to work HiP high intensity pigments™ Kohl Eyeliner. Here’s how:

* Stroke the fine-tipped brush on the back of your hand to remove excess.
* Apply. The brush enables you to get right at the root of your lashes.
* To intensify or smudge the line, pick up the pigment on your hand with a chisel-head eyeliner brush, and smudge

You might also use a sealer, but bypass an overpriced product like Paula Dorf Transformer ($19-20) in favor of La Femme Cake Eyeliner Sealer ($3.50) through makeupmania.com.

Now that I’ve gotten the hang of using HiP high intensity pigments™ Kohl Eyeliner, I’m enjoying using it.

You may find HiP high intensity pigments™ Kohl Eyeliner at big box stores (Target, Walmart), supermarkets, drugstores (particularly The Big Three), and drugstore.com.

Messy, but worth it

I’m not big on black eyeliner, as it’s too harsh. I’m hooked on black brown eyeliner and now on eyeliner that are described as bronze black.

For pencils, two of my favorites are Physicians Formula Eye Definer Flat Automatic Eyeliner Pencil in Black Bronze and Velvet Touch Eyeliner in Metallic Brass from Denmark’s GOSH Cosmetics.

Lately, I’ve discovered L’Oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner in Bronze. It’s messy because it’s a loose powder, but the look is smudgier than what you get with a pencil and the results are worth the extra care in handling this product.

L’Oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner in Bronze

Here are some tips to minimize the mess:

* Cover your (preferably non-porous) countertop with facial tissue or wax paper to catch powder. Fold the tissue or wax paper to save the spilt powder for later use. Put some sort of weight on top – I use the container itself.

* Tap the dispenser right side up vertically – not at an angle. This minimizes spills. Unfortunately, the container does not come with a sifter.

* Get a damp cloth to wipe the the countertop clean in case of spills.

I apply L’Oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Eyeliner with the self-contained slant-edged brush to my upper lash line and to the outer corner of the lower lash line. Then I dot the lower lash line with a pressed powder eyeshadow in a softer color, using the pointed end of the Line & Define Brush from Beauty Strokes. This helps fill in sparse lower eyelashes.

Jilbean: The Great Eyeliner Hunt

SpillToJill has announced Jilbean: The Great Eyeliner Hunt. Here are favorites of The Style Page:

I prefer using eyeshadow with an eyeliner brush to using pencils. Pencils are too much a hassle to keep sharp. I like charcoal brown, almost black eyeshadow for a smoky eye. I’ve already stated my fondness for Sonia Kashuk’s eyeshadow in Night, available at Target stores. My new favorite is ModelCo ColourBox Eye Shadow Ibiza 13 (pictured), available from Sephora.com.

As far as a pencil is concerned, I like Jordana Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in Bittersweet. At less than $2, this is a best buy. Find Jordana at Walgreen’s or prowl dollar stores.
