It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ now comes in more shades

One frequent criticism of BB/CC/DD creams is that they come in too few shades.  For foundation, I switch between It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ and Hourglass Cosmetics Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick.  I was pleased to learn that It Cosmetics expanded its shade range for Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+.  The six shades are: Fair, Light, Medium, Medium Dark, Dark, and Deep.

AeroMinerale spray-on makeup

I first learned of AeroMinerale spray-on makeup through a press release about a tie-in with the Breaking Dawn movie. Over 1000 cans were used on the set! It appeared on Bella’s dressing table!

But what amused (or disgusted) me is that the pink aerosol can was described as “soon-to-be-Iconic.” G-d knows that I think that “iconic” is one of the abused words in fashion and beauty. It sets my teeth on edge. “Soon-to-be-iconic”??

AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation
AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation

Anyway, back to the product. You may apply AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation by spraying it directly on your face. However, I wouldn’t recommend it. It leaves too much deposit. I had to blot with a tissue but even then, the coverage was too thick. Moreover, it stains clothing and gunks up the hair. I prefer spraying AeroMinerale on a dampened wedge makeup sponge and applying it with the sponge, as shown in this video featuring AeroMinerale founder Yolanda Halston:

AeroMinerale also has a spray-on Hydrating Mineral Primer. The primer also leaves too much deposit, so I blot with a tissue after applying it. Even so, it’s fun to use.

AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation comes in ten shades, from Ivory to Ebony. Want to know your best shade? Use the AeroMinerale web site’s extensive database of foundation shades for a match.

AeroMinerale is worth a try. A 1.5-oz can sells for $20 at aerominerale.com, but you can buy it for less. I bought mine for $16-17 dollars at CVS. To find even lower prices, use Google Shopping. I found $12 (clearance) at drugstore.com.

Best foundations for dry skin

I received an invitation from SkinnyScoop, a new social media application.  What, more social media?  It takes away from the hard work of writing original articles.  Facebook is good for interacting with other beauty bloggers, and Pinterest has been helpful in overcoming writers’ block.  While other beauty bloggers ignored the invitation, I decided to go for it.  SkinnyScoop offers the opportunity for bloggers to compile lists, get recommendations, and create professional looking widgets for your blog.

I decided to compile a list of recommendations for foundations for dry skin via SkinnyScoop.  Here are the recommendations I received:

CoverFX NaturalFX Water-Based Foundation

Ever since I finished my bottle of MAC Satin Foundation and the MAC salesgirl tried to sell me on a peach-toned foundation (that was years ago), I’ve been on a quest for the perfect foundation: one that feels good on the skin, evens out my complexion, and matches my skin tone.

I went to Sephora to find a new foundation.  I was interested in MUFE’s HD Invisible Cover Foundation for its wide variety of shades and Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Foundation as I thought that a crème foundation would be good for my dry, maturing skin, but the salesgirl sold me on Cover FX Natural FX Water-Based Foundation.

Cover FX Natural FX Water-Based Foundation

Sephora’s website says that Cover FX Natural FX Water-Based Foundation provides “sheer to medium coverage” and “a natural-looking, satin finish.”   I had to spread it very thin to obtain sheer coverage, and it did not provide a satin finish.  Cover FX Natural FX Water-Based Foundation can double as a concealer: I wonder if the thickness has something to do with Cover FX founder Lee Graff’s background as a corrective MUA .    As I moisturize nightly, I have some sheen on my forehead, and the foundation’s finish did not match the finish of my forehead.

CoverFX Natural FX Water-Based Foundation is rated SPF 15, which suggests that you should apply it fairly thickly.  Its active sunscreen ingredients are octinoxate, octocrylene, and oxybenzone.

One good thing about Cover FX Natural FX Water-Based Foundation is the wide variety of shades for various skin tones:

  • B Series: Golden brown to ebony undertones
  • C Series: Primarily pink undertones
  • E Series: Pink and yellow undertones
  • M Series: Yellow and olive undertones

The salesgirl selected E10 Warm Ivory for me, which seemed to be a good match for my skin tone.

To quote U2, I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.

CoverFX is available at Sephora stores and www.sephora.com.

The fine print: this article contains links for the Sephora affiliate program, through which I can earn nominal commissions.

Review of Perfekt Beauty Skin Perfection Gel

Perfekt Beauty Skin Perfection Gel

Perfekt Beauty describes its Skin Perfection Gel as:

A skin perfector that instantly per-fekts and enhances the appearance of the skin offering an easy alternative to traditional foundation, primer, color corrector and powder.

I was pleased to receive a sample of Skin Perfection Gel in Luminous. Perfekt Beauty describes Luminous as appropriate for fair complexions. However, Luminous suited my light complexion better than Radiant, which Perfekt Beauty describes as appropriate for light to medium tones.

When I applied Perfekt Beauty Skin Perfection Gel, it was evident that there was a lot of silicone, due to the slip of the product: in that way, Skin Perfection Gel is a 2-in-1 product that can serve as primer and foundation. I hesitate to say that it also functions as a color corrector, as it provides a light tint. It is best for women who don’t have major flaws in their complexion. Women who have something to hide might want to layer more opaque coverage (mineral makeup powder, for example) over Perfekt Beauty Skin Perfektion Gel. Once the product dries down, it has a matte finish that makes powder unnecessary.

The downside of Perfekt Beauty Skin Perfection Gel is that it doesn’t provide sunscreen. I still rely on smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF 15 and Dermaxyl, but it has a petroleum smell that’s unpleasant. It would be great if Perfekt Beauty could formulate a Skin Perfection Gel with sunscreen and without the unpleasant smell of smashbox’s product.

Perfekt Beauty is a small line of cosmetics that consists of three products: Skin Perfection Gel, Eye Pefection Gel, and Body Perfection Gel. You may buy Perfekt Beauty at its website, Sephora stores, and Sephora.com.

Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup SPF 15

I’ve been critical of the marketing of so-called mineral cosmetics: in a previous article Mineral Madness, I wrote:

The term “mineral” had referred to loose powders, but now it’s being associated with products such as lipstick, liquid foundation, and pressed powders that contain other ingredients in addition to minerals. Thus, all cosmetics can be considered mineral cosmetics! Be critical, and recognize that “mineral” is just another marketing construct.

Pür Minerals is seizing on the marketing construct of mineral makeup being “pure.” It is a line of pressed powder foundation, blushes, and eye shadows that contain ingredients other than minerals.

Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation With SPF 15

Despite my criticism of the marketing of so-called mineral products, I do like Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation With SPF 15. I took it along with me on my recent trip, in addition to Daniel Chinchilla Flawless Finish Liquid Foundation and Paula’s Choice loose powder (no longer available). I found that Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation With SPF 15 met my needs (particularly coverage of redness on the cheeks) and that I could have done without the last two products and lightened my makeup bag.

One can easily pick up powder from Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation With SPF 15. To apply, I use the tools and techniques recommended by Pür Minerals founder Joli Baker:

I remind everyone that a light dusting of powder will not provide adequate protection from the sun. I wear smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF 15 and Dermaxyl under Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation With SPF 15.

Find out what others say about Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation With SPF 15.

You may find Pür Minerals at Ulta and Dillard’s in the U.S. and Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada.

Introducing Daniel Chinchilla Cosmetics

Daniel Chinchilla Cosmetics is a new line of cosmetics: it’s so new, in fact, that online shopping won’t go live until Sunday, March 8, 2009!

Daniel Chinchilla Cosmetics debuts with 3 different formulas of foundation (liquid, creme-to-powder, and dual wet/dry powder), each of which comes in 16 shades: in short, there’s something for any skin type and skin tone. It will also feature bronzer in two different shades and cover-up trio in five different shades.

Flawless Finish Liquid Foundation from Daniel Chinchilla Cosmetics

Daniel Chinchilla is a fashion, beauty, and editorial make-up artist. He was recently featured on Get Your Face On, TLC’s reality TV series starring Napoleon Pardis. By listening to his clients, Daniel learned that many of them still found it difficult to find makeup shades that suited their skin tone. Daniel sought to address their needs by starting his own cosmetics line.

CoverGirl Simply Ageless Anti-Aging Foundation
icon

The marketing campaign for CoverGirl Simply Ageless Anti-Aging Foundationicon features Ellen DeGeneres, whose signing as a spokesmodel has been the most hyped of anyone whom I recall recently: the first openly gay model to sign! Ellen, with her blond hair and blue eyes, is actually a throwback to the bad old days when CoverGirl promoted that beauty ideal with the likes of Cheryl Tiegs, Cybill Shepherd, and Christie Brinkley.

Enough about Ellen. What about Simply Ageless? It’s described as makeup with Olay Regenerist (was this an intended pun?) serum mixed in. Cream foundation is not my favorite type of makeup to begin with, and even though this makeup is intended for mature women, it is excessively matte and drying.

At $13.99 (Walgreen’s sells it for $15.99), it’s more expensive than other CoverGirl offerings. Simply pass up Simply Ageless.
