NARS Andy Warhol Collection

It won’t be out until October, but NARS has posted a teaser video for its Andy Warhol collection, as licensed by the Andy Warhol Foundation:

Which Warhol character do you think will make an appearance in the collection?  I’m banking on Edie Sedgwick.  Jane Forth should be another character.

NARS Eye Shadow

The NARS Spring 2012 collection drops tomorrow, Friday, January 13 at narscometics.com:

NARS Spring 2012 Collection

Here’s the product from the NARS Spring 2012 Collection that I covet (from group shot, above, lower right):

NARS Single Eyeshadow in Lhasa

NARS Single Eyeshadow in Lhasa is described as a “shimmery lavender-gray.”  NARS often names its shades after exotic locales, and Lhasa is particularly evocative for me, as I’ve had the distinct privilege of visiting Tibet.

Shades of purple are more sensuous than grays or browns.  See my eye shadow picks from NARS’s “permanent” collection:

NARS matte eye shadow in New York is a plum brown.

NARS eye shadow in Ashes to Ashes is a “Shimmery violet based brown”

NARS The Multiple Bronzer

NARS Cosmetics has expanded the range of shades for its popular The Multiple stick to include four matte bronzers.

These sticks don’t drag and apply very smoothly. You can apply these bronzers directly, using a light touch, or do what I do, which is to apply some to the fingertips and rapidly “tap” it onto the face to apply and blend. You may use The Multiple bronzer on the cheekbones and ridge of the nose (in other words, where the sun would hit your face) to give your face that “sun-kissed” look; alternately, you might use NARS Cosmetics for contouring the face.

NARS The Multiple bronzer in Tuomota

The four shades are:

Tuomota – for light to medium complexions with golden yellow undertones
Malaysia – for medium to dark complexions with red undertones
Rapa Nui – for dark complexions with red undertones
Cap VertSephora.com describes this shade as “matte baked warm clay.”

You may shop NARS The Multiple bronzer online at NARS Cosmetics, Sephora.com, and Beauty.com.

NARS The Multiple in Orgasm

François Nars first burst upon our awareness through Allure magazine, with an article that featured photos of him applying body makeup to Madonna for a Vanity Fair photo shoot. Since that time, he’s established his very popular NARS Cosmetics line.

NARS’s powder blush in Orgasm is a beauty editor’s favorite and has become one of NARS’s signature products. Its other signature product is The Multiple multi-tasking stick for cheeks, lips, and eyes. It should be no surprise then that NARS has created The Multiple in Orgasm. I’ve begun using cream blushes only recently, and I’m hooked. NARS The Multiple in Orgasm is so sheer that I found that I could swipe it straight from the stick onto my cheeks, with only minimal blending. It is also beautiful as a highlighter on top of the cheekbone.

On the other hand, I found the lip stain gloss on the NARS Lip Stain Gloss/Lip Gloss (not pictured) difficult to use. The first time I tried it, I made a mess of it – around my lips, on my fingers. It is very pigmented, and when I tried to blend it with my fingers, I needed dual-phase makeup remover to remove the stains. In addition, it takes longer to dry down than, for example, L’Oréal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour, which also features a liquid lip stain.

My second attempt was more successful. Here’s how I did it:

– I lined my lips, by applying concealer with a fine tip brush. I softened the edges so that it wasn’t obvious. I could also have also used a clear lip pencil: I’ve identified brands that market clear lip pencils.

– I used a very light touch: in other words, I didn’t press the wand against my lips.

– I stopped shy of the corners of my mouth when I applied the lip stain gloss.

If you like a highly pigmented stain, then the dual Lip Stain Gloss/Lip Gloss is for you.

You can find NARS The Multiple and NARS Lip Stain Gloss/Lip Gloss at NARS Cosmetics.

Revlon limited edition collection

No doubt about it – Revlon took a drubbing in 2006, with the collapse of Vital Radiance the same year that it debuted. One also wishes that Revlon would have brought in new faces when it totally revamped Almay, but instead model Elaine Mellencamp (wife of singer John) continues as the face of Almay.

Enough of that – Revlon has introduced a number of flashy new products in its limited edition collection, including Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain
icon and Bedroom Eyes™ Powder Liner. Just Bitten™ Lip Stain has a rollerball applicator – not the best for even layering. What’s more, it dries quickly. The shade of Just Bitten™ in Blood Orange reminded me of orange popsicle stain. Other shades include Berry Juicy, Cherry Tart, and Plum Wicked.

I chose Revlon Bedroom Eyes™ Powder Liner in Smokin’, which is great for creating the smoky eye. Be sure to tap excess powder from the applicator onto a tissue beofre applying – otherwise, it gets all over your cheek and countertop. Clearly, when using Bedroom Eyes™ as part of your eye makeup, do your eye makeup before you apply base. As FT Weekend columnist Edwina Ings-Chambers, who had a makeup application by NARS artist James Boehmer, writes:

The first thing to remember, Boehmer says, is that you shouldn’t try to replicate the 60s thing: keep the liner off the lid and stick to putting it round the eyes. “It’s more about the outer corner of the lid, not all over the lid,” he says.

Be prepared with cotton balls and eye makeup remover or Swabplus Liquid Filled Cotton Swabs, Eye Makeup Remover. Be sure to finish this look with lots of volumizing mascara.

BTW Generally, I find lipliners too harsh. Revlon is one of the two companies I know that offers a clear lipliner (ColorStay®) at a nominal price – the other being Paula Begoun’s Paula’s Choice line. Paula also recommends Lip Line Fixer from The Body Shop, which proves that she’s not partisan.

I haven’t seen L’Oreal’s clear lipliner in ages, so I guessed that L’Oreal discontinued it. An alternative is a lipliner that exactly matches the color of your lips, which is why MAC’s lip pencil in Spice has remained so popuplar.
