Best foundations for dry skin
I decided to compile a list of recommendations for foundations for dry skin via SkinnyScoop. Here are the recommendations I received:
Saturday night’s face mask sheet treatment

| Leaders Clinic Dr. for Skin 2-step Snail Collagen Filler Mask |
Vegans will go nuts! This treatment contains snail mucus, which the package says is an “elasticity building ingredient.” It’s as slimy as it sounds, but I wake up with such a glow!
The Style Page discovers six (non-food!) uses for coconut oil
In a subsequent post, I’ll reveal a product that adds sheen to the skin and protects the skin from the elements. It also adds shine to the hair and smooths flyaways. And it’s 100% natural, food-grade, vegan, and organic! Interested??!!
The suspense is over. The miracle product is: coconut oil!
I don’t mean to push Barlean’s over other brands, as I have no basis for comparison, but this is the brand that the staff in the personal care department of Whole Foods recommended and I bought. The difference is that she uses it for cooking purposes (including popping corn!) and I use it on my skin and hair.
Barlean’s is solid in the jar at room temperature, but liquefies when rubbed in the hands.
- Use as a makeup remover.
- Apply coconut oil on dry patches over your regular serum or moisturizer. Coconut oil provides a barrier to the elements: good to know in colder weather.
- Apply to add shine to the legs. Coconut oil is water-resistant and lasts through more than one bath.
- Apply a layer of coconut oil on the legs before shaving. It provides “slip.” You don’t need a body wash or shaving cream or gel.
- Coconut oil is a hair care staple for women in the tropics. Apply it to the hair for shine. Until I “discovered” coconut oil, I bemoaned the lack of shine in my hair.
- Use coconut oil to tame flyaways.
- Use coconut oil as a substitute for those highly fragranced hot oil pre-shampoo treatments. I comb coconut oil through my hair and cover my hair with a disposable shower cap and a terry turban over the shower cap to let the oil penetrate.
Barlean’s costs $16 for a 16 oz. tub, whereas rms beauty charges $18 for a 2.5 oz. jar of its raw coconut cream. I find Barlean’s perfectly serviceable, and see no reason why I should be paying more for less.
Seven fave skin care products
Nonetheless, here are seven skin care products that I enjoy using:
2. Lisa Hoffman Beauty A & C Serum goes on slick and oily, but when you wake up in the morning, your skin is soft. I also like her Day Cleanser, which I use at night. I have never understood the purpose of washing the skin both morning and night.
Lisa Hoffman Beauty skin care is no longer sold through her web site, as she seems to be focusing on her fragrance concepts. Nonetheless, you can find some products through DermStore.
I received a treasure trove of Lisa Hoffman Beauty skin care products from her former PR rep, but let it lie in the closet: bad 😦 I’m glad that I pulled it out.
3. The Solution by Envision Beauty streamlines skin care. It is designed as a multi-tasking product that replaces night cream, serum, eye cream, and makeup primer. It also advertises itself as a replacement for day cream, but since it’s not rated for SPF, I hesitate to call it a replacement for day cream. The Solution by Envision Beauty is a lightweight lotion that leaves a non-greasy, non-oily finish. This is one of the few samples that I have received that I’ve used to the bottom of the bottle and went back to become a paying customer!
Since I reviewed The Solution by Envision Beauty in April 2009, my skin has become dryer and my skin care needs have changed. I need a richer moisturizer. Nonetheless, I occasionally apply The Solution by Envision Beauty as a lightweight primer before my makeup. Founder Kimberly Snyder has since fashioned herself as a “celebrity nutritionist.”
You may shop The Solution by Envision Beauty at its web site.
4. Better Botanicals Rose Tulsi Toning Mist (“tulsi” is Sanskrit for basil) is not a necessary skin care step, but I love spritzing this fragrant mist on my Beautyblender sponge with it before applying makeup. You may shop Better Botanicals through its web site.
What are my three other picks?
5. Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover is a dual-phase eye makeup remover. I like dual-phase eye makeup removers so much better than ordinary eye makeup removers, as they do a better job at removing eye makeup. Use after your cleansing routine to remove the last trace of eye makeup. Neutrogena is widely available at drugstores, supermarkets, and big-box stores.
6. DHC Deep Cleansing Oil leaves the skin feeling soft. It removes makeup so thoroughly that you might not need a separate eye makeup remover after using this!
You may shop DHC at its web site.

7. Face Mask Sheets are a weekly treat for me. I like kicking back in the reclining chair for 15-20 minutes and listening to music as I wear a face mask sheet. Unfortunately, Walgreen’s is no longer carrying face mask sheets from The Face Shop (Korea). I have not tried SK-II, but there are more inexpensive options. Fortunately for me (don’t hate me! :-), I’m near the Cinderella boutique, which carries a variety of Korean face mask sheets, some for as little as a dollar. Cinderella is located in the courtyard of Lotte Plaza, a huge ethnic supermarket in Chantilly, Virginia. Grocery shopping is a contact sport at Lotte Plaza! 🙂

Meaningful Beauty Cindy Crawford Crème de Serum

| Meaningful Beauty Creme de Serum |
Meaningful Beauty Crème de Serum is a combination cream and gel with a double helix delivery system. According to the Meaningful Beauty FAQs,
The white portion contains anti-aging peptides, which help protect skin from wrinkles and fine lines. The clear layer of hyaluronic acid acts like a sponge on your skin, helping it grab and hold moisture. The melon shade is the [superoxide dismutase] SOD [anti-oxidant] complex, designed to protect skin from free radicals and harsh environmental elements.
I am not loyal to any brand or skin care regimen. I like to mix things up, and have been alternating use of the Meaningful Beauty Crème de Serum as a nighttime moisturizer with The Solution by Envision Beauty. It makes all the difference to apply moisturizer to skin that’s not yet dry. I found that Meaningful Beauty Crème de Serum had a slightly unpleasant smell upon dispensing and felt tacky, not silky.
Meaningful Beauty Crème de Serum cannot be purchased separately: it must be purchased as part of the kit. You may purchase the Meaningful Beauty Cindy Crawford skin care kit through its web site or infomercial.
The fine print: Guthy-Renker sent The Style Page a sample of Meaningful Beauty Cindy Crawford Crème de Serum for review. It also sent me the Sheer Cover Sophisticate Face Palette: as with Meaningful Beauty Crème de Serum, it is not sold separately and must be purchased as part of the kit through the Sheer Cover website or infomercial.
Treat it, don’t conceal it
Temptalia, who might be the foremost beauty blogger in the blogosphere, asked, How do you conceal acne?
My answer: treat it, don’t conceal it. I think that concealer only draws attention to pimples – or else I’m not that skilled in applying concealer.
When I got pimples, I used Paula Begoun’s Exfoliating 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion and applied a thin layer of mild 5% or less benzoyl peroxide lotion (less expensive store brands are available) to treat the pimple. I would apply hot water compresses (soak a washcloth in steaming hot water, let cool slightly, wring out the washcloth, and press) to bring the pimple to a head. I don’t recommend that others follow my example, but I have been known to pop the pimple once it comes to a head.
Surprising advice from L’Oreal
“Over-moisturizing can train skin to think it doesn’t need to produce its own moisture. Moisturize when needed, but don’t overdo it.” From Twitter.
Amazing. I would have thought that it’s L’Oreal’s business to push the use of moisturizer – kinda like the advice to shampoo, rinse, and repeat.
Jackie of Belen Echandia wrote, “hahah they have a very good marketing team I’d say. That’s exactly what they wanted you to think :).”
More winter skin care advice – face
This article is a follow-on to recent articles on caring for the lips and overall skin care in winter.
Experts often recommend a richer moisturizer in winter time, but you might want to use it on dry patches only. Hydrocortisone cream can minimize redness and relieve dry patches, but be sparing: repeated use over time will thin the skin.
I use The Solution by Envision Beauty as an overnight moisturizer. I reviewed this light weight lotion back in April 2009, and my appreciation of this product has only grown since I posted my review. This is one of the few product samples I’ve received that I have used to the bottom of the bottle and went out to purchase afterwards!
I appreciate that Kimberly Snyder revealed that many cosmetics companies spread skin care ingredients among several products, such as moisturizers and serums. The Solution is designed to be a 4-in-1 product: still, the $75 price tag per bottle is too steep for my budget. I took advantage of a recent BOGO promotion to replenish my supply.
While the bottle recommends 2-3 pumps, I find that a single pump works well, even for my dry skin. This also helps to conserve precious product.
Aside from product, I also run a vaporizer in my room, particularly during the night. You might also hang damp clothes taken from the washing machine or lay damp sweaters on a sweater dryer to humidify the air.
In a subsequent post, I’ll provide tips about body care and hand care during winter.
More winter skin care advice – lips
The article Expert advice on winter skin care provided a lot of excellent tips about protecting your skin during cold winter weather. In this article, I provide my time-proven tips about keeping lips soft in winter.
Instead of removing dry flakes from my lips with a soft toothbrush, I use Paula Begoun’s lip treatment, a wax that removes flaking skin, but it’s no longer available through her website. It was modeled after Beauticontrol’s Lip Apeel.
May I say something about Aquaphor? Allure touted it as a lip protectant, but it does little for me. A lip product with Vitamin E works better than Aquaphor. The Agatha Ruiz de la Prada fruit-flavored lip balms
that you find at duty-free shops at airports in Europe (I have also seen them at anthropologie) are very emollient. Sally Hansen Healing Butter for Lips and the Reviva Labs Vitamin E Stick
are satisfactory, but not as good as the Agatha Ruiz de la Prada lip balms. Skin care expert Liz Earle recommends ingesting Vitamin E capsules, but Vitamin E is also great as a topical treatment.
