Top 100 Beauty and Fashion blogs

Recently, as I was checking my stats, I discovered that one of the referring pages was Top 100 Beauty and Fashion Blogs of 2012 from Skincare-news.com.  That’s right – The Style Page made the list.  I don’t know what criteria Skincare-news.com used.   Certainly, its criteria didn’t include blog traffic and blogs weren’t ranked by blog traffic.  Still, it was gratifying to be listed next to Temptalia.

Here’s what Skincare-news.com said about The Style Page:

The simple, streamlined Style Page began in 2001 and has since evolved into a go-to source for makeup and skincare reviews, beauty industry news and more. Look for the occasional fashion posts and interviews with beauty insiders as well.

It was gratifying that it seemed that someone took some to review The Style Page blog and find out what’s it about.

Still, I have to be grounded about this.  Andrea at Savvy Blogging writes in her article Compensation, Worth, Lists…and a flash back to Junior High:

And then I realized something. Blogging lists are like sitting at the cool table in junior high. … So if you made the list, Congrats! If you didn’t make the list, Congrats!

Indeed.  I had the experience of being extended an invitation to a beauty bloggers network, only to have the same person rescind the invitation because I didn’t have the blog traffic.  Who’s in, who’s out, who’s cool, who’s not – just like junior high.

My New Year aspirations for The Style Page blog

Happy New Year 2012

I reactivated The Style Page blog in August 2011 after a year and a half absence.  I’ve reconnected with the terrific creative people whom I’ve met over the years that I’ve maintained this blog and made new friends.

So what do I want for this blog?  What everyone blogger wants: more readership, more blog traffic, and opportunities for remuneration (as long as I can maintain my integrity).  But what I want most of all is reader engagement.

Then, if there’s sufficient interest, I’d like to get my own domain name and engage a professional to design a logo and upgrade to WordPress.  Any advice?

Happy New Year

I will be leaving for India tomorrow. I’ll be logging in only sporadically for the next three weeks – maybe to update my Facebook status, but likely not to blog.

Visiting my in-laws is the purpose of the trip – it’s been two years since I last saw them (my mother was doing poorly last year, and I didn’t want to go overseas in those circumstances). I also plan to shop for textiles while I’m in India: talk about serendipity – I found an issue of Departures devoted to India at the seniors’ home where my mother lives, and found out all the great places to go shopping.

Here’s to a Happy, Prosperous, and Successful New Year for all!

An idea: Use January 6 (Epiphany) as an opportunity to share gifts (post-Christmas sales, perhaps re-gifting). Epiphany marks the arrival of The Three Kings with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Learn more about Epiphany on Wikipedia.

I’m now ThisNext’s Beauty Expert Maven

Beauty booty” style=”border-style: solid; border-color: rgb(221, 221, 221) rgb(187, 187, 187) rgb(187, 187, 187) rgb(221, 221, 221); border-width: 1px; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt;” width=”390″ height=”399″ />

Well, knock me over with a feather. ThisNext, the social shopping website, has not only named me a Maven for 2008, but it’s also named me its Beauty Expert Maven.

So how does an Expert Maven differ from an ordinarily Maven? This Next says this about Expert Mavens:

“They’re the crème de la Maven crème, ThisNext’s most visible specialists in a product field. You can see what they’re recommending on our Community page.”

If the winner so requests, I will include a link to her blog. Of course, she may publish the review on her blog as well: just include a reference to The Style Page, thestylepage.blogspot.com.

I’m a maven!

I’ve been named a maven on the ThisNext social shopping network! Was I surprised!

What is a ThisNext maven?

“Mavens are the leading and most influential members of the ThisNext community. They are the tastemakers and trendspotters that make ThisNext such an awesome place to be. They find the most unique products from the coolest stores, find them first, and write informative and interesting recommendations.”

Changes to The Style Page blog

I had installed the Talkr MP3 player so that you can listen to articles on The Style Page as well as read them, but I removed it, as my computer became infected shortly thereafter. I can’t establish casuality between installing Talkr and my computer getting infected, but I wasn’t going to take any risks.

I also removed banners for Amazon.com, drugstore.com, Beauty.com, and Sephora.com on the sidebar, as these banners were being replaced by teasers for T&A vidoes and ads such as “your online privacy might be at risk” and “you might have already won.” I am continuing to use text links, however.

I purchased and installed an entire suite of security software from McAfee, but that didn’t solve the problem. Then, as I was starting Firefox (my preferred browser), there was a popup window alerting me about the new Yahoo! toolbar. As Yahoo! is a trusted source (It also hosts my web site), I went ahead and downloaded the toolbar. After installing the toolbar, I ran the anti-spy software from there. Problem solved! Go figure …

Updates to The Style Page website

I’ve been having a lot of fun inserting add-ins on The Style Page website to enhance users’ experience. New features include Google Search on the front, About us, What’s New, and Contact us pages, where search results are featured on the same page. Also, I’ve added links from Yahoo! My Web that are customized for many (but not all) pages on the website. Finally, I’ve inserted a widget that enables display of thumbnails of linked pages with mouse-over on the Cosmetics page, in which case you might want to look at the page “below the fold.”

Have fun searching or browsing our companion website, and share your comments with me via the Contact us page or here on this blog.

Changes to The Style Page blog sidebar

I had to customize the layout of The Style Page blog to automatically load the Flash widget for ThisNext. However, customizing the layout meant that many of the elements (Subscribe, Shopping, Blog archive, and Blogroll) in the sidebar were lost, and I had to reconstruct the elements.

I’ve also added a “Rate this blog” feature and a BlogExplosion button.

If there are any other news readers I should add under Subscribe, please contact me at thestylepage [at] yahoo.com.

I’ve been using My Web from Yahoo! to provide links to newly discovered web sites. You can find the five most recent links under My Web Bookmarks on the left-hand sidebar. By selecting “My Web 2.0 Links,” you will be directed to all bookmarks I’ve collected since the last update of The Style Page web site – it is simply too laborious to update the static HTML pages anymore.
