My absence from blogging

I came back from a trip to India on September 1. The day my husband and I left, TSA screeners were passing carry-ons through the detectors twice, which significantly delayed the security process. The TSA official told me that I had to wait until my carry-ons had entered the detectors before I was allowed to cross the line to walk through the metal detector. The wait was a long time, given the double screening, and I was getting impatient. I regained my equanimity only when I held out the possibility that the Inspector-General (IG) for TSA might have cited laxity among TSA screeners, which meant that they had to re-double their efforts.

Given TSA screening, maybe it was just as well that I didn’t carry my own laptop. I was dependent on my husband for access to his laptop. While I had scheduled two articles (Robert Jones, Fall’s Color Story) to go live in my absence, I was not able to provide timely stories on the pre-sale of Twilight Beauty or Sears getting back into the beauty business after discontinuing its Circle of Beauty concept several years ago.

From The Pink Room

Sarah Barton-King began as a designer of shoes, bags, and scarves, which were sold through luxury stores around the world. She also opened her own shop The Pink Room in London’s Notting Hill. Now she’s entered the world of fragrance, through two fragrances inspired by French literature.

Parfum No 1 was inspired by the writings of Marcel Proust. Here is the charge that Sarah gave to perfumer Guy Robert:

Imagine Marcel Proust having tea with his aunt in the garden at about four, As the sun becomes more gentle, the old roses start to give off their bouquet, Lime cuts across, taking away the cloying sweetness, some bergamot to give a mellow richness also some jasmine, a little violet and vanilla for the petite Madeleine. Not too heavy, not too rich.

The fragrance that Guy Robert created is an utterly feminine, romantic fragrance with the following notes:

Top notes: citrus with fruity nuances;
Middle notes: rich floral tones of jasmine, lily of the valley, and violet.
Base notes: woody, spicy and fruity, with hints of vanilla, moss and musk.

I found the floral notes to be most dominant.

The Pink Room Eau de Parfum POUR TOI

POUR TOI was inspired by Gigi, the ingénue and courtesan-in-training created by Colette (née Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette) and portrayed by Leslie Caron in the movie musical. For this fragrance. For The Pink Room PARFUM FOR TOI, Sarah went to Grasse, the fragrance capital of the world, to collaborate with a master perfumer and blender:

Top notes: Lemon, Blackcurrant, Grapefruit,
Middle Note: Rose, Fleur de Melati, Lily of the Valley
Base: Sandalwood, Vanilla, and White musk.

This fragrance is very citrusy when it is applied, but dries to a floral that’s lighter than Parfum No 1.

Pink Room Parfum No 1 and PARFUM POUR TOI are available through LuckyScent.

smashbox PHOTO FINISH FOUNDATION PRIMER SPF 15 & DERMAXYL™

I have a confession to make: even though dermatologists and other skin care experts advise us to wear sunscreen all year long, I wear it only in the spring and summer, when I expect to spend more time in the sun. It’s not a practice that I encourage others to emulate.

The truth is that I hate the gunky feel of most sunscreens. That’s why I’m glad I found smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF 15 and Dermaxyl. It has the smooth finish of a foundation primer with chemical (absorber) sunscreens 7.5% Octinoxate (Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate) and 5.0% Octisalate (Ethylhexyl Salicylate). Surprisingly, I haven’t had problems with irritation, which is why I usually stick to barrier (reflector) sunscreens such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF 15 and Dermaxyl

Many of us like to lighten up on foundation in the spring and summer. Even if you use a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15, I recommend using smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF 15 and Dermaxyl under your tinted moisturizer to boost sun protection. This product is a must under mineral makeup: even though bareMinerals is rated SPF 15, don’t expect a light dusting of loose mineral makeup to provide you adequate sun protection.

You may find smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer SPF 15 and Dermaxyl at smashbox.com, Ulta, Sephora stores, and Sephora.com.

Yves Saint Laurent PERFECT TOUCH Radiant Brush Foundation

There’s a lot of good to say about Yves Saint Laurent PERFECT TOUCH Radiant Brush Foundation. It’s lightweight, yet it provides good coverage. It feels good on the skin. It has a subtle luminescence that brightens the complexion.

On the negative side, the foundation tends to separate. I shake it before application: the package insert recommends that the user dispense foundation onto the back of her hand and blend it. It takes some practice to squeeze just the right amount, not too much. I find the brush applicator a nuisance, as I blend foundation by stippling with my fingertips or with Beautyblender.

Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch

Editor’s favorite Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch lives up to its hype. It brightens the eye area and other “shadows” on the face, without being overly pearlescent. Some might find, however, that Touche Eclat doesn’t provide the necessary coverage to serve as an concealer.

Touche Eclat was created by Terry de Gunzburg, who has gone on to establish her own luxe line By Terry.
