The whole world knows by now that Aretha Franklin died last week of pancreatic cancer. This is heresy, but I could not get into Aretha. Is it a cultural thing?
You might remember that Starbucks sold compilation CDs at its counters. Here’s a gem that I found through those compilation CDs:
You might associate Piece of My Heart with Janis Joplin, but Erma Franklin (Aretha’s sister) recorded it in 1967 before Janis. This video is a live performance from 1992.
Cher is a 2018 Kennedy Center Honoree along with Philip Glass, Reba McEntire, and Wayne Shorter. In tribute to her selection, I present this cover of ex-husband Sonny Bono’s I Got You Babe featuring Cher and Beavis & Butthead.
Butthead: “Is it true that you used to be, like uh, married to that Bono dude?”
Hawaii Governor David Ige signed a bill to ban oxybenzone and octinoxate from sunscreens sold in the state by Jan. 1, 2021 to protect coral reefs and marine life. Beauty trade groups such as the Personal Care Products Council, chemical industry organizations, skin-cancer prevention proponents and big sunscreen brands regard the act as misguided and dispute the research behind it.
To differentiate themselves from large players with oxybenzone- and octinoxate-driven sunscreens, emerging mineral sunscreen purveyors are promoting their products as reef-safe or not containing the banned ingredients, oxybenzone in particular. The term reef safe could increasingly be subject to concerns as it, similar to other marketing terms in the beauty industry, is unregulated and lacks a clear definition.
Putting that aside, Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50 is a great sunscreen.
Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50
It advertises itself as going on clear. It’s a thick white cream in the jar, but with a little blending, it leaves no whitish cast (+). It also has a matte finish (+). It’s not irritating (+) . Active ingredients are Octocrylene 4% and Zinc Oxide 5% – no oxybenzone.
👍🏻 Recommended. I bought Ocean Potion Face Zinc SPF 50 at Safeway. I’ve also seen it at Giant.

#Walkaway is a media campaign in which Americans post videos about why they walked away from the Democratic Party. What’s cool about #WalkAway is that it attracts African-Americans, whites, Hispanics, immigrants, gays, straights, women, men, etc. It goes to show you that the Democratic Party doesn’t own women and minorities.
Not surprisingly, people who align themselves with the Democratic Party claim that Russian bots are behind #WalkAway. It’s amusing that people who were soft on the Soviet Union and communism now regard Russia as Public Enemy #1. Hey, Hillary, how did the Russian reset work out for you? 🙂
Did Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC) go out of business? A few weeks ago, it abruptly shut down its website, its New York City store, and all its social media accounts. Sephora isn’t always kind to small brands: lawsuits between Sephora and OCC might provide some clues to OCC’s apparent demise. This story haunted me. Back when my beauty blog mattered and OCC’s only products were its Tarred (black) and Feathered (White) lip balms in tins (this was before Lip Tar), I corresponded directly with OCC founder David Klasfeld, who’s cited in the Racked article Sephora’s Lawsuit With Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Is a Staggering Case Study in How Beauty Products Are Sold. #IKnewThemWhen
In this feature Revealed: The Magic Make-up Formula for Achieving Perfect Skin at Any Age from DailyMail.com Femail, make-up artist Oonagh Connor (Instagram: @oonaghoo) describes the right ratios of foundation to concealer to use according to your age. She says that women should ditch foundation as they grow older. I just turned 60, and it looks like she’s recommending that women in their sixties wear a mask (70% foundation, 30% concealer)!
This video is taken from the Frank Sinatra show in 1958. It starts with wise-cracking between Sinatra and Keely Smith’s then husband Louis Prima. Keely sings “When Day is Done.”
While she put away the crinolines, she wore the same haircut throughout her life. 🙂
Certain events really rile me. One is Hillary Clinton’s trashing much of the U.S. electorate while overseas in India. The other is last Sunday’s March for Our Lives.
Considering that many public schools are helping to rally more kids to the cause and are even supplying school resources and personnel time to the effort, tax payers should ask: Is this an acceptable use of school funds? More importantly, why is a publicly funded school supporting one side of a very contentious and complex constitutional matter?
A taxpayer-funded school shouldn’t take sides on this issue.
American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten
The American Federation of Teachers, which helped bus students and parents to Tallahassee multiple times last week, are now assisting with the March for Our Lives rally. The federation’s president told BuzzFeed News that they are also helping support next month’s march as well as helping to shape the vision and mission for the group once the rally is over.
“There are a lot of people who know how to put on a march in Washington and we are here to help support the teens with that experience in terms of logistics and strategy but it’s still early and they have some time to figure that out,” AFT President Randi Weingarten told BuzzFeed News. “We will be here for that ‘oh sh** moment’ when they realize they need things like permits.”
After that, she says the goal is to carry that momentum until November — with some of the students already using the hashtag #VoteThemOut.
“We are also marching towards midterms,” she said, adding that the activists intend for gun control and student safety to be a major platform and key issue for voters in the midterm elections.
I’m a product of public schools and support public schools. I’m not into union-busting. The AFT’s activism, however, could be read as damned good justification for private schools or homeschooling. It’s not the role of teachers, particularly in taxpayer-funded public schools, to organize on behalf of one point of view.
So why is an ostensible fashion and beauty blogger writing about current events? Most women’s fashion and beauty magazines support only liberal to leftist positions. I subscribed to Allure and InStyle, as they had been apolitical, but didn’t renew once these magazines became political. In my humble way, I’m trying to provide a counterweight to women’s fashion and beauty magazines.
