Meet the six black female @GOP candidates for Congress

Can you believe it? Only 7 days to the 2018 midterm elections.

Ebony magazine recently had a feature on 18 African-American women running for Congress:

The problem was that all 18 women were Democrats.  After a lot of outrage, Ebony changed the title of its article to Meet the 18 Black Democratic Women Running for a Seat in Congress.

While African-American Democratic female candidates for Congress outnumber African-American Republican female candidates for Congress 3-1, the six African-American Republican 🐘 female candidates for Congress deserve to be highlighted.  If Ebony won’t do it, Cold Cream ‘n’ Roses will!

While watching the last Republican National Convention, the lack of diversity among delegates became painfully obvious.  I thought that Mia Love and Nikki Haley were presented as tokens.

I hope that there will be many many more women and minorities running as Republicans.  I want to show that the Democratic Party no longer owns women and minorities.  I want to show that the Republican Party is no longer the Party of Old White Men ™️

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ now comes in more shades

One frequent criticism of BB/CC/DD creams is that they come in too few shades.  For foundation, I switch between It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ and Hourglass Cosmetics Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick.  I was pleased to learn that It Cosmetics expanded its shade range for Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+.  The six shades are: Fair, Light, Medium, Medium Dark, Dark, and Deep.

Our 24th wedding anniversary

Today my husband and I celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. We wed on October 23, 1994 at the Barns of Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA, near Washington, DC.

#MusicMonday 5 songs from the 80s That You Might Have Forgot

The article Ten Songs From the ‘80s That You’ve Probably Forgotten About from PJ Media inspired me to put together this short playlist of five songs from the 80s that you might have forgotten (or else don’t know because you were born later):

#MusicMonday – Taurus – Spirit

Today’s #MusicMonday feature is the instrumental Taurus by the sixties band Spirit.

Why is this relevant? Notice the riff in Taurus. Does it sound like the beginning of Stairway to Heaven?

Last week, a three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a jury’s decision that Led Zeppelin did not plagiarize the chords from Spirit’s Taurus. The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit that accused Led Zeppelin of stealing portions of “Stairway to Heaven” from “Taurus,” which was written by Randy California (né Randy Wolfe) of the 1990s band Spirit. The dispute stemmed from a passage 45 seconds into “Taurus,” which sounds like the opening guitar tones of “Stairway,” which was released three years after “Taurus.”

I won’t comment on the merits of the lawsuit, but it’s unfair to say “if the other guys were any decent, more people would have heard of em.”  No, no, no.  Spirit was great.  Songs like “Fresh Garbage” and “I Got a Line on You” were fixtures of late 1960s FM radio.

#MusicMonday Fontella Bass “Rescue Me”

I’ve been thinking a lot about Aretha. Previously I posted a video of her sister Erma singing Piece of My Heart. Today I feature Fontella Bass. Many people wrongly associate the song “Rescue Me” with Aretha, but Fontella Bass sang the song.

“Rescue Me” was released in 1965, two years before Aretha joined Atlantic Records and cut loose from the artistic constraints that Columbia Records put upon her. Fontella Bass recorded the song at Chess Studios in Chicago. Backing musicians on the track included drummer Maurice White (later leader of Earth, Wind, & Fire) and Minnie Riperton as a background singer.

This video captures Fontella Bass’s appearance on Shindig!

“Rescue Me” gave Chess its first million-selling single in 10 years. Bass recalled:

I had the first million seller for Chess since Chuck Berry about 10 years before. Things were riding high for them, but when it came time to collect my first royalty check, I looked at it, saw how little it was, tore it up and threw it back across the desk.

The original versions of the record and BMI credited Raynard Miner and Carl William Smith. Bass approached her manager Billy Davis about securing her writing credit, but when the record came out, her name was still not on it.

Sephora’s crummy rewards program

Glossy posted an article on Sephora’s “upgrade” to its Beauty Insider program.  Whatever, it’s still the crummy program where you accumulate points to obtain samples that you’d otherwise should get for free.Sephora versus Ulta

When Sephora, in its munificence, announced a limited time 10% off discount on products, beauty enthusiasts were indignant.   Just before that, Ulta had a 20% off sale, including prestige items.  Also, you earn cash back rewards with Ulta’s loyalty program.

On account of Ulta’s cash back rewards, I first visit Ulta to see if it carries a product.  If it doesn’t, then I go to Sephora.  Bonus: join Ebates for earning additional cash back points.  HT Marcia of Beauty Info Zone.

#MusicMonday Erma Franklin – Piece of My Heart

The whole world knows by now that Aretha Franklin died last week of pancreatic cancer.  This is heresy, but I could not get into Aretha.  Is it a cultural thing?

You might remember that Starbucks sold compilation CDs at its counters.  Here’s a gem that I found through those compilation CDs:

You might associate Piece of My Heart with Janis Joplin, but Erma Franklin (Aretha’s sister) recorded it in 1967 before Janis. This video is a live performance from 1992.
