Powerpuff Girl-inspired eye makeup by MUA Dayane Zanni

I was a fan of the Powerpuff Girls when it aired on Comedy Central in the 1990s.  I especially enjoyed talking about the TV episodes with my nephew in India:

Q. How did the Powerpuff Girls defeat the Rowdyruff Boys?

A. They kissed them.

Then, Neil reviewed the episode scene by scene.

My husband was amazed that Neil and I had the same cultural references, even though Neil was in India and I was in the U.S.

The Powerpuff Girls must have been a global phenomenon.  Brazilian makeup artist Dayane Zanni created these eye makeup looks inspired by Lindinha, Docinho and Florzinha. otherwise known as Bubbles, Buttercup, and Blossom.

Bubbles is the sweet, girlish Powerpuff Girl.  Here Dayane uses a blue and yellow eye makeup design inspired by Bubbles.

Buttercup is the most temperamental and “kick ass” of the three.  Here Dayane uses a green, black, and white eye design inspired by Buttercup.

Blossom balances out Bubbles and Buttercup.  Here Dayane uses an orange and red eye design inspired by Blossom.

Pop Beauty Peak Performance Mascara

Pop Beauty was founded by Sara Strand, sister of Petra Strand of Pixi.  Whereas Pixi’s vibe is ethereal, Pop Beauty’s is more rock’n’roll.

Pop Beauty Peak Performance Mascara
Pop Beauty Peak Performance Mascara

I haven’t seen a product like Pop Beauty Peak Performance Mascara before.  Instead of a brush wand, it features a flexible tip with a fine-toothed comb.  The Instructions have you twist the bottom of the tube 5 times (5 clicks) to deposit mascara on the comb.  When you first open the mascara, however, you have to twist the tube again and again to “prime” it.  Product dispensing is actually fairly controlled.

The great thing about Pop Beauty Peak Performance Mascara is that the comb enables you to get really close to the lash line. You can get an effect similar to tightlining.  Be forewarned, this mascara can dry out due to its delivery system and you can get specks under your eyes. For me, this is not a problem: i just remove the specks by flicking a Q-tip.

Pop Beauty Peak Performance Mascara does not smear and maximizes the appearance of your eyes through coating and separating the lashes.

Pop Beauty Peak Performance Mascara comes in 3 shades: Brilliant Black, Inky Indigo, and Cocoa Charm.  It costs $20 a tube. Twenty dollars is a lot to pay for mascara, considering that mascara is the one cosmetic you should replace most often.  As much as I like this mascara and delivery system, I’d not sure if I’d shell out $20 for it.

You may shop Pop Beauty at Ulta stores and ulta.com.

AeroMinerale spray-on makeup

I first learned of AeroMinerale spray-on makeup through a press release about a tie-in with the Breaking Dawn movie. Over 1000 cans were used on the set! It appeared on Bella’s dressing table!

But what amused (or disgusted) me is that the pink aerosol can was described as “soon-to-be-Iconic.” G-d knows that I think that “iconic” is one of the abused words in fashion and beauty. It sets my teeth on edge. “Soon-to-be-iconic”??

AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation
AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation

Anyway, back to the product. You may apply AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation by spraying it directly on your face. However, I wouldn’t recommend it. It leaves too much deposit. I had to blot with a tissue but even then, the coverage was too thick. Moreover, it stains clothing and gunks up the hair. I prefer spraying AeroMinerale on a dampened wedge makeup sponge and applying it with the sponge, as shown in this video featuring AeroMinerale founder Yolanda Halston:

AeroMinerale also has a spray-on Hydrating Mineral Primer. The primer also leaves too much deposit, so I blot with a tissue after applying it. Even so, it’s fun to use.

AeroMinerale Hydrating Mineral Foundation comes in ten shades, from Ivory to Ebony. Want to know your best shade? Use the AeroMinerale web site’s extensive database of foundation shades for a match.

AeroMinerale is worth a try. A 1.5-oz can sells for $20 at aerominerale.com, but you can buy it for less. I bought mine for $16-17 dollars at CVS. To find even lower prices, use Google Shopping. I found $12 (clearance) at drugstore.com.

Cover Girl & Olay Concealer Balm

Leave it to the master marketers at P&G to take a pink lotion (the original Oil of Olay) and build an brand with several skin care lines around the Olay name.  Then there’s the cross-branding: Cover Girl & Olay and the Gillette Venus & Olay razor.  Cover Girl & Olay Concealer Balm is a recent addition to the Cover Girl & Olay line promoted by Ellen DeGeneres.

I have a confession to make: I have never mastered concealer under the eyes.  Many MUAs think that concealer is a basic and essential part of makeup.  However, when I apply concealer, what looks good at one angle doesn’t look good at another angle.  Then there’s the problem of blending.

So how do I use Cover Girl & Olay Concealer Balm?  To cover red spots on my face.  After my husband made remarks about my makeup looking like a mask, I went for a nautral look.  First, I used Mally’s Skin Perfecting Tinted Liquid Face Defender to even out my skin tone.  I then applied Cover Girl & Olay Concealer Balm over the red spots and blended it with the end of a moistened Beautyblender.  Presto!  Cover Girl & Olay Concealer Balm melds with the skin.

Cover Girl & Olay Concealer Balm comes in 6 shades:

  • Fair
  • Fair/Light
  • Light
  • Light/Medium
  • Medium
  • Medium/Deep

Cover Girl & Olay Concealer Balm is widely available at supermarkets, drugstores, and big box stores.  Watch out for coupons and in-store sales for discounts.

Wei To Go Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser

I’m a convert to facial cleansing oils after using DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil. The idea of a gelled oil cleanser sounded intriguing to me.

Wei to Go Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser
Wei to Go Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser

I forsook my DHC skin care routine when I traveled to India and instead took Wei To Go Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser with me. The beauty of this product is that it removes makeup completely, even eye makeup. Also, the product is very portable and convenient: it comes in TSA-friendly 10 ml tubes and takes up next to no space in your toiletry kit. Plus, there is no liquid mess.

To, apply a pea-sized amount of cleanser to your fingertips and smooth onto the face; then, rinse with water.

Wei To Go Beauty is a skin care line from Wei Brian, whom you might know through her appearances on HSN. Given how Wei extols her traditional Chinese plant knowledge, it might be disappointing to find so little natural plant extract in Wei To Go Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser: orange and pomegranate extracts are low on the ingredient list.

Wei To Go Real Clean Gelled Oil Cleanser comes in a package of 3 10 ml tubes for $26.00 or a kit that contains a single tube and CC Cream for $19.00.  You may buy the products through www.weitogobeauty.com or www.beauty.com.

Disclosure: The PR rep for Wei to Go Beauty provided me the 3-tube set of REAL CLEAN Gelled Oil Cleanser for review. Opinions are my own.
