Due to lack of time, stress, pollution and other factors, we often do not take care of our skin. As a result, a number of skin problems start showing up. To counter these, I am sharing a few easy face care tips to get healthy skin.

Skin care tips

1. Smile Often
Smiling is a natural drug for face care! It releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin. As a result of smiling, we feel good and appear younger for a longer time compared to those who sulk.

2. Cleansing:
Make sure you cleanse your face at least twice a day with a gentle face wash/cleanser that suits your skin.

We need to maintain a thorough skin cleansing routine every day to remove all the impurities and grime build up from the facial skin and pores. A gentle daily face wash can be used or you can opt for the one that has gentle exfoliating beads to scrub away accumulated dirt on a daily basis. Never scrub your face too harshly. Try to make a habit of cleansing at least twice, in your daily routine. Remove makeup thoroughly before hitting the sack to prevent skin ageing, breakouts, blotchy and unhealthy skin.

3. Using a toner is a must after cleansing:
Toning is the next important step after cleansing. If you are in a hurry, try taking few drops of Rose Water (a lot of good brands are available including Patanjali, FabIndia, Lotus, Khadi, Dabur etc) and pat on your face. This is the best toner that suits almost every skin type and instantly makes your skin feel refreshed.

4. Moisturizing after toning:
This is the last step of the CTM (Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing) routine that we simply cannot afford to skip. Moisturizing does not necessarily have to be with greasy skin creams. A lot of products are available which can act as a savior for your skin.

For oily skin, opt for a non-comedogenic facial moisturizer that won’t clog the skin pores. A water-based gel or moisturizer can work very well. Brands like Neutrogena and Sebamed have products specifically designed for this skin type.

For combination skin, an oil-free, non greasy, skin-balancing moisturizer should be used. Again, there are drugstore brands specifically developed for such skin type.

If you have sensitive skin, look for a hypoallergenic and fragrance-free moisturizer.

For dry-skinned beauties, moisturizers containing glycerin, lanolin, Shea butter, almond oil, petrolatum etc help to lock in and retain the moisture. If you going out during daytime, always use a moisturizer with a sunscreen or apply a sunscreen after applying your moisturizer once your skin completely absorbs the moisturizer.

5. Sunscreen is a must for spotless skin:
The harmful UV rays of the sun can cause significant skin damage and skin cancer too. So, wear a sunscreen (minimum of SPF 30) during the day no matter which season of the year you are in.

6. Dietary habits:
Water itself is a great natural hydrant, so drink plenty of it throughout the day to detoxify and get naturally glowing skin. Sip water, green tea or a homemade fruit juice instead of tea, coffee or aerated drinks. Eat at least one fruit daily, preferably those with high-water content or citrus fruits. Adding green, leafy veggies, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as walnuts, almonds, Salmon and tuna fish to your diet will bring noticeable improvement in skin texture.

Last but not the least getting the best beauty sleep for 7-8 hours every night will give you a wonderful skin.

DHC Kakonjuka skin care collection debuts March 1

I got hooked on DHC after I opened the sample of its Deep Cleansing Oil in its catalogue and tried it. I really liked not needing to use a separate eye makeup remover. I put a little Deep Cleansing Oil on a cotton pad or even better, DHC’s Silky Cotton (a favorite of Marcia at beautyinfozone.com), and swipe it gently over my eye lashes to condition them and remove stubborn makeup.

DHC has a number of new introductions this year:

  • Pore Cleansing Oil and Pore Face Wash: read Sheila’s review at Painted Ladies
  • BB Cream: what took DHC so long? 🙂
  • Body butter to complement its Olive-Corn Body Scrub & Polish

DHC Kakonjuka skin care collection

DHC’S Kakonjuka skin care collection debuts March 1. It consists of a lotion, an “essence” (actually a lightweight moisturizer), and a thicker cream. DHC has designed these products to be used in sequence after cleansing and washing; however, it’s up to you to decide whether the essence is enough moisturizer for you. They contain a special blend of six Japanese and Korean botanicals:

  • Maitake mushroom
  • Reishi mushroom
  • Platycara strobilacea
  • Licorice leaf
  • Great burnet
  • Purslane

When you open the products, you might be surprised by the brownish color of the lotion and the grayish color of both the essence and the cream. You might even find it off-putting. The color is due to the botanicals; DHC does not add colorants to its products.

I used the Kakonjuka skin care routine at nighttime for a week. I woke up with my skin feeling soft and ready for makeup.

DHC sent me samples of the Kakonjuka skin care collection to try. Opinions are my own. All package labeling was in Japanese; however, when the collection debuts March 1, it will have English labeling.

For more information about the DHC Kakonjuka skin care collection, view the press releases for the lotion, essence, and cream.  Each product costs  USD $32.00 and will be available on the DHC website.

New beauty at Target

Some, like Pacifica makeup, have already launched.  JK Jemma Kidd apparently has been discontinued.

When I visited my local Target, stock for Boots was low: I thought that Target was going to phase out Boots, after Walgreens bought a 45% stake in Boots, but signs promise us that Target will continue to carry Boots.  Here’s the scoop: a beauty adviser (the first one I’ve met at Target) told me that there will be new Boots no7 and Botanics products in two weeks.  She also told me that Walgreens will carry Boots products at a store in downtown DC:  I suspect that this is the Walgreens at 4225 Connecticut Ave NW, which houses a Look Boutique.

Kroma v. Krohma

Kim Kardashian pregnant

MUA Lee Tillett claims that the Kardashians stole her cosmetics line’s name Kroma (without a “h”).  She is suing for $10 million damages.

Meanwhile, Lee’s attorney Elliot Gipson claims Kim – who says she came up with the name [Khroma] herself – was aware via her placement agents TLK Fusion of a 2010 deal to ensure product placement for Kroma on an E! Entertainment show Kim was due to produce.

He said: “On or about May 2010, representatives for Tillett and TLK Fusion were engaged in discussions regarding the possible product placement of the KROMA cosmetics line on the television reality show special ‘The SPINdustry’ that was scheduled to air on E! Entertainment Television following an episode of ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’.”

I don’t put it past Kim to steal the Kroma name.  Remember how the Kardashians appropriated Monica Botkier’s handbag designs for Sears’s Kardashian Kollection?

MAC Joins Forces With Rihanna – would you buy?

First, there was the brief gig with Cover Girl; then, she was dropped as the face of Nivea, as her image didn’t fit the family values of the brand.

Now Rihanna has joined forces with MAC.   What makes this MAC collaboration different is that it’s not a one-off collection: there will be four collections.  RiRi Woo lipstick will be the signature piece of the collections.

Skinects.com: Déjà vu all over again?

Skinects.com describes itself as a “Matchmaking site for your skin”: that is, you create a profile about your skin issues and it spits out recommendations.   Its “chief matchmaker” is cosmetics chemist Ni’Kita Wilson, who was an expert for YouBeauty.com, the site promoted by the ubiquitous Dr. Oz.

Hasn’t this been done before?  Doesn’t mySkin.com do the same thing?

The Bahu of Bengal and the rivers of #India

The Style Page is also The Bahu of Bengal!   Bengal is a state in eastern India, and “Bahu” means daughter-in-law.  It’s a tribute to my in-laws, who reside in Bengal.

Today, I’ve been fiddling with creating a map of the rivers of India on the Bahu of Bengal blog.   Now you’ll understand why I haven’t been blogging about beauty.

Napoleon Perdis is going upscale!

In a surprising move, Napoleon Perdis is going upscale with his self-named line (not to be confused with his NP Set line that is exclusive to Target).  The Napoleon Perdis line is carried by Ulta and Dillard’s.  More recently, Nordstrom has picked up his line.

Now comes news that Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus have picked up his line.   His first limited edition collection exclusive for BG/NM (really, one company) is the Swan Lake collection, inspired by his collaboration with the Australian Ballet:
